Rumors: Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sport lens delayed due to manufacturing defects

Sigma 150-600mm f:5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports

I received some information that all Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sport lenses for Nikon mount have been delayed - apparently Sigma corporate pulled back all units that are currently in transit due to a defect that was discovered in the first batch of lenses. The shipments are expected to resume in 45-60 days.

The new Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM lens is currently available for pre-order at Adorama, Amazon and B&H. Technical details on the lens can be found here.

Thats bad then when is the C series coming …which was directly comparable to Tamron 150-600

  • itcrashed

Well damn. Good they picked it up before distributing!

Does anyone know what defects there are? I purchased a unit about a month ago from a Sydney store (they only received two units), tested it all weekend; all functions ok, and images are pin sharp, no probs at all.

I have a Nikon fit one and is working perfectly

  • Well it would be nice to know what the recall is as I have a Nikon S 150-600 and it seems to be working fine..

I’ve owned the Sigma 150-600 for about a month now, and I’ve detected no faults in the lens. I’m in contact with a small number of fellow owners, and none of them have mentioned any problems. This issue has been mentioned on a couple of rumour sites, but, interestingly, not on Sigma Rumors. What to make of that?

Haters gonna hate! Viva la Sigma

    • CERO

I only heard of one that had the covering paint flaking out.
But then, I wonder what is the real defect.

      • Rob Bye

If memory serves… that was a Tamron, and even then, I don’t know if I fully believed that claim.

        • CERO

No, it was a sigma sports. He even praised it for being “built like a tank”. Pretty sure he got a replacement already. Noone else in the forum who had the lenses had his problem. So perhaps a single unit defect.

          • Rob Bye

Which forum was that CERO? I’d like to learn more about this.

          • CERO

            the hog. aka huglyhedgehog.

Okay, I looked through that forum. I found all kinds of rumours and misinformation, about both the Sigma and the Tamron. I didn’t see the mention of a technical issue, but from all the wrong info I had to sift through, I’m ready to dismiss whatever was said. Rest easy, from owning both lenses, I can tell you they both work fine.

          • CERO

its not misinformation, one of the guys owns one and as been taking photos of it. And seems to be a single case of defective paint.

  • Maji

Maybe the defect is with Canon mount ones… a friend of mine who owns a Canon, tells me that he had problems with Sigma lenses AF with his Canon bodies. However, I am glad that Sigma is proactively taking steps to take care of known problems.

There are no issues with the Sport lens at all, other than ridiculously high demand for a very fine lens. I have one personal copy of it, as well as two rental units in Nikon mount and they are all performing flawlessly!

  • Nikos Delhanidis
    • I did not expect Sigma to confirm that. My info is coming from a Sigma rep.

  • Glen Lastiwka

I got one of the first copies of the Nikon mount after testing it I sent it back. If you get one of these you will know right away theirs something very wrong!! Very poor image quality,OS not working, some Image smearing at 600mm, images appear soft even when using fast shutter speeds.

  • Mic

As I expected, Sigma rumors reported this from Adorama regarding the ‘faulty’ batch:

“We received confirmation directly from the president of Sigma that this rumor is false.. Just high demand and unusually small shipments out to each retailer because of the demand.”

  • Rob Bye

This rumour has been found to be false.

Sigma Rumors reports Adorama contacted Sigma and heard straight from the top this lens has not been found to have any defects, and the only reason it’s still in short supply is production has not yet ramped up to meet the enormous demand.

So, there it is: there is nothing to worry about. The lens is still shipping.

    • I guess we have to wait and see if somebody will receive this lens in the next 60 days. I doubt it but I could be wrong.

  • nicolaie

Why don’t they just do what Nikon does, pretend that the defect doesn’t exist, release it anyways and when the whole thing blows wide open, just wait a month or two and release a new version ..

    • Rob Bye

No need to even pretend, if the defect really doesn’t exist.
