Meike announced a new 12mm f/2.8 wide angle APS-C lens designed for mirrorless cameras. Additional information:

Earlier this year Meike announced four new mirrorless lenses that are no longer listed on their website, but it seems that there is a new 8mm f/2.8 fisheye lens listing that is currently inactive:

Looks like the Samyang/Rokinon but at f/2.8 instead of f/2.0. I’d still pick the Samyang unless this has impressive IQ.

Or is considerably cheaper (that wouldn’t make much difference but it would for some).

Edit: at $229 this will find a market I think

229? How good can it be really?

Hmmm well there is another 12mm that’s twice as fast for $399 which is pretty good.

    • Or if it has “better” sunstars. I have the samyang 12 2.0 and it’s great, but the sunstars are really ugly IMHO.

  • Reviews of Meike’s 50mm lens showed so so IQ. Major brand competing lenses are available on sale regularly for not that much more, and those have much better IQ. So the reviewers’ recommendation was that the Meike was OK for those on a very tight budget and willing to make some IQ allowances in return for affordability. Unsaid but obvious was that you get what you pay for.

Meike might’ve been stung by reviews like that and the amount of competition. The company probably decided to hold off until it can be more competitive on IQ, or else decided to give it up because the competition is too stiff and its price advantage isn’t that compelling.

Meanwhile, Meike’s Web pages linked in this post are devoid of useful information.
