This new Laowa 24mm f/14 Replay 2x macro lens by Venus Optics was spotted at Photokina (yes, f/14 not f/1.4) - a full frame macro lens (maximum magnification 2:1) with a long and thin lens barrel meant to be used to shoot shy subjects at difficult spots. Shipping will start next year and it will be available in Nikon and Canon mounts. Price was not announced. Here are few more pictures of the lens:

Looks more like a 240mm lens. That extension would be more consistent with a 2:1 RR.

    • Dmitry Anisimov

it’s a relay lens, like periscope

      • AR22

so does this lense invert the picture?

        • Dmitry Anisimov

I don’t know. To get rid of inversion, It one can use relay two times or relay and a prism.

  • Wesley

    Tripod-I mean lens bag included.

  • sickheadache

Is that a Lens in your Pocket..OR you are just happy to see me?

  • T.I.M

That’s the lens my doctor use to check my butt hole when it hurt.

    • Were you facing the doctor? Are you sure he used a lens? Are you sure he was a doctor?

    • Very like it, yes!

    • RoiseTouv

The one for your butt have a led ring on it, please check

  • Tolot

    wtf….

  • Zos Xavius

Pentax mount? I hope so. I would buy one just because its so bizarre.

    • Tolot

bizarre is the right word.. i expect a lot of use in bizarre porn….

  • Jeffry De Meyer

    why 24mm?

    • for a bigger DOF?

      • Jeffry De Meyer

But it forces you to get closer and reduces your DOF that way, you also get perspective distortion which is not something I would want when shooting macro.

        • vriesk

          Nope, it does not.

Everything you know about focal lengths goes silly once you go past the 1:1 magnification.

    • J-Man

More magnification for the length, a 20mm lens would be 3-4x lifesize.

    • the truth hurts

i would say why f/14 lol

    • MB

In relay setup magnification equals focal length of relay lens divided by focal length of reversed lens, therefore for 2:1 magnification they are using combination of 24mm reversed lens and (probably simple single element) 48mm relay “lens” … 🙂
I am not sure about the IQ though … and by IQ I mean image quality … also at f/14 with that much distance to image plane barely any light reaches the sensor …

  • Henry

    The “Pinocchio Lens”®™!

  • They should name it the Pinocchio

  • Roger Johansen

Weird, please DON’T take my money 😀

  • Les

This type of relay lens gets used in cinema for scale model work. Some include two 90 degree prisms and bends so that you can get even lower.

  • Paul

    Lol what?

  • Tolot

    for magnifying trumps tiny hands?

    • Joel Germain

      or his tiny dick.

      • TwoStrayCats

The details in his tax returns.

      • John Doe

        comparing it to yours, probably.

  • TheInconvenientRuth

Poor LaoWa, if only they knew how many photo ‘enthusiasts’ base their buying on how much street cred they get and how ‘pro’ their gear looks instead of what it can do…

  • padam

They should have nicknamed it the Stinger

  • Christopher J. May

Didn’t Zeiss make something like this many years ago?

  • What an incredible creative optical company with so many ideas. I already own the 60mm 2X and 15mm macros and waiting for the 105 trans lens. They may be difficult to use on a Nikon because these lenses are totally manual with no electronics or auto aperture, but on a Sony A-mount body (A77 II), the in-body stabilization, the the actual finished image in the electronic view finder, and focus peaking, these lenses are relatively easy to use. However, they are very specialized and really can’t be used successfully as general purpose lenses.

    • I’m intrigued by the 105mm STF. Yes, I’m a Nikon shooter, but I do almost all of my stuff in manual focus and live view anyway, so it’s not like I’d be losing anything. Maybe I’ll rent one to try it out.

      • Unlike the 15 and 60 lenses which I stop down to F16, the 105 STF should probably be used wide open or close to it so that won’t be a problem.

Any MSRP on this puppy yet?

Correction: It’s a relay lens , not ‘Replay’

    • it was listed as replay in the original article and I could not find any other info onine

          • kacoooper

Press release sent directly to me, since I’ve tested lenses of theirs such as the new 12mm (on the Northlight Images site) There is no more info about the relay lens in the release. I’ll be finding out more when they are back from Germany.

  • Eric Calabros

1/250s at f/14? What ISO he used? 819200?

    • jvm156

it’s a macro so usually gotta blast the subject with major light

    • johnny

Exactly. Focusing through a lens with f/14 max aperture is problematic in low light situation.

  • Dmitry Anisimov

Such lens might be banned in some countries.

    • TwoStrayCats

TSA might have a hard time letting that on in your carry-on.

  • Cornbeetle

    Reddit brought me here.

  • Ron Rhodes

Looks a lot like a rifle. If I pulled that out of my camera bag in my neighborhood, the bullets would fly.

  • Ian Fenn

its a relay lens no such thing as a replay lens> Its not worth the money ( what ever they charge). For 2X magnification: get a 50mm enlarger lens reverse it and couple it with a 100mm lens. You will get 2X and with a much lower effective F stop than the F 14 of this pointless beast. If you use a 100mm AF lens you will have AF!

    • Zos Xavius

Someone posted a sample on petapixel and honestly it looks no better than a fast 50 with a diopter attached.

  • David Attenborough wants one 😉

  • Giovanni Lorusso

they should have added a sort of Led light around the front element!

  • Herbert Stanislaus

Looks like it’s either flash or blurry pictures – f/14 means exposure times in the danger zone and that long slim barrel will vibrate like a tuning fork – as if it weren’t difficult enough to keep things still at 2:1!

  • Alfie Goodrich

They can shove it up their…… 🙂

Seriously though, just get a set of extension tubes. Much more fun. Super cheap and you can fit them on any lens.

  • animalsbybarry

This lens would benefit from a compact led ring light that fits on the lens barrel
I wonder if one will be available or will come with the lens ?

    • Fred

Only some of our Eastern friends eat fried bugs

  • whisky

have to hand it to Laowa for some innovative lens ideas. once-upon-a time, long-long ago, Nikon and Olympus were also this creative and experimental. 🙂

    • Go back to some of the early Nikon lenses in the 60’s like the 180-600, 360-1200, and 1200-1700. I just sold my Nikkor 1,200 F11 with ED glass. Nikon was way ahead in innovation back then.

      • whisky

back then, they didn’t fear to fail by being different.

  • TwoStrayCats

Does anyone have a 6mm polarizer for it yet?

    • Fred

Add a 10X filter and you can excuse your camera shake by shooting your bug walk off the leaf.

    • TwoStrayCats

      Give Adorama a few months.

  • johnny

Shy objects? I bet they were long gone when they spotted this utter monstrasity.

  • TwoStrayCats

It should have a teeny little ring flash so you can stick it down a termite mound and see what smiles up at you!
