Sony to announce new 100MP and 150MP large format BSI sensors in 2018

First a quick reminder - in some parts of the world it's already April 1st, so in the next 24 hours take anything you read online with a grain of salt.

There is a video interview on YouTube with Sony representatives that talks about new 100MP and 150MP large format BSI sensors that are supposed to be introduced in 2018:

It’s amazing how much great new tech always comes out around April 1

The video is not a good fake

    • Mistral75

      The video is legit.

Admin: so as to not confuse anybody, these are actually medium format sensors what they are talking about in the video. The hidden news here is that there will be a 100MP Fuji GFX/Hassy X1D in the not too distant future, maybe that’s why they both currently have a 50 (S on the Fuji, C on the Hassy) at the end of their model names, so as to easily distinguish them from their upcoming 100MP twins. It was expected though for the big Ph1/Hassy rigs to not rest in their 100MP laurels and eventually get new 150MP sensors in the not too distant future, too, otherwise how would they be able to keep on charging for the equivalent of a nicely optioned out Mercedes Benz anymore?.

    • Yes, unless this whole thing was a joke…

      • CaMeRa QuEsT

I think it’s the real McCoy. Seems like Sony Semiconductor was showing their wares in some kind of trade show and this funny guy just happened to be there to film about what Sony Semi is pushing nowadays.

      • Bo Dez

The look much larger than medium format to me. The largest one looks larger than 6×7

        • paige4o4

The usable part of the sensor is a fair bit smaller than the entire chip assembly.

  • Ivan Kutsarov

    R.I.P m43 🙂

    • Zos Xavius

Because m43 users are looking to go to large format…..

      • Ivan Kutsarov

Camera sensors are getting bigger and cheaper day by day. Why bother with almost smartphone sensor size and unnecessary compromises.

I assume that in the next few years there will be many available affordable mirrorless MF solutions aimed at mass market.

        • Zos Xavius

People already don’t like the lens sizes of modern 35mm lenses vs what we had 20 years ago. What makes you think more people want bigger lenses? Once you get to telephotos only the crop factor gains you savings in weight because you can use shorter lenses. With MF it’s the exact opposite. Even m43 is much, much larger than a cell phone sensor. I find apsc to be adequate for most things.

        • El Aura

Smartphones have between 1/3″ and 1/2.3″ sensors. That is between 3 to 3.7 stops ‘slower’ than m43. ‘Almost smartphone size’ this ain’t.

I’ve down-sized from an iPhone 7+ to an iPhone SE. The effing 7+ is too effing large for the pockets of my tight-fitting jeans 😉

BTW the Mass Market voted with their wallet for Cameraphones several years ago 😎

iPhotographers don’t read rumor sites—does that mean that rumor-mongers will have to get real jobs??

  • EPICVIS

100MP BSI next year, why do I spend money on GFX or X1D now?

    • Price? The Fuji GFX is priced very well in my opinion.

    • CaMeRa QuEsT

Good question! Both Fuji and Hassy people have said that their lenses will be able to resolve 100MP sensors, it’s just that everybody thought that that sensor will be the same one currently used on the Ph1/H6 big DSLRs, instead of one with the same size as the current 50MP sensor. But you have to realize that those future 100MP cameras will cost substantially more than what they are charging for the current 50MP bodies.

  • g_disqus

    large format?

    • Max

      Makes medium format look… Medium..

    • Mistral75

No, existing 33 x 44 and 40.4 x 53.7 sensors used by Fujifilm, Hasselblad, Phase One and Pentax for their medium format cameras.

  • Zos Xavius

    Too soon. 😉

  • Max

    Large format. Nice

    • Mistral75

      Medium format: 33mm x 44mm and 40.4mm x 53.7mm.

      • Max

        The headline says large format..

        • Mistral75

The headline yes but not the video.Did you play it?

  • raziel28

April Fools’ Day? If not, price will be < 60.000€ 🙂
    Regards

Anything I ever read on ANY rumors site is taken with a full shaker of salt. Always.

  • Mistral75

Note that the blog entry on Image-sensors-world is dated Saturday, April 01, 2017 00:05.

    🙂

In this instance BSI is the acronym for bull **** information. Sony have found a new method of creating sensor using bull manure. This allows the creation of extremely large sensors for less than the cost of a mobile phone sensor.

  • Les

Nothing to see here. The 50MP sensor is the one in the Fuji GFX and Hasselblad X1D. The larger 100MP sensor is offered in PhaseOne and Hasselblad 645-size digital backs.

The “new” news is that Sony is working on a 100MP GFX-sized sensor, and a 150MP 645-sized sensor. The plan, for now, is to release them by the end of 2018.

That’s probably a year and a half from now. No reason to get too excited. There’s lots of time to save-up your money.

    • Mistral75

Indeed + Sony Semiconductors also plan to release a monochrome version of their current 100Mpix 40.4mm x 53.7mm sensor (IMX211) by the end of this year.

    • Bo Dez

But they look larger in size. The biggest one looks larger than 6×7

      • Les

That’s a perspective illusion. The sample sensors are in a transparent display box. They seem big compared to the man’s hands because they are much closer to us than they would be if he was handling the sensors and not the box.

It’s a more subtle version of the classic tourist picture of someone holding-up the leaning Tower of Pisa.

        • Bo Dez

Yeah I initially considered that and I guess they are normal sized but they still look enormous and bigger to me.

  • Eagle of MorningCalm/E=MC

I don’t need a 100mp camera. All I need is a 3mp camera with a professional IMAGE PROCESSOR. I believe Image Processor unit are more important than mega pixel. Eventhough, we have higher mega pixel and see lots of noise over 400, then it would be such a waste….

    • kimbentsen

What do you need 3MP for? I only need 1MP.

  • Bo Dez

Well assuming thins’t an april folds joke, that looks much larger than medium format. What dimensions are these sensors?
