Rumors: Sigma working on a Foveon sensor for video use

Diyphotography reports that Sigma could be working on a Foveon sensor for video use:

"That lack of speed, though, has put off many potential Sigma camera owners. Now, a new patent has been filed showing that Sigma looks to be doing something about it. The patent seems to aim more toward the video side of things but no doubt it will speed up its stills capturing capabilities, too. Perhaps this is why Sigma semed a little evasive about camera questions recently at PPE. It might also explain why Sigma have gone so gung-ho on the Cinema lenses lately."

A video camera you can only really use at ISO 100. Should be a hit!

Also: a video camera that can do real 4:4:4 colour sampling. That may not mean anything to you, but it would be the answer to many video professionals’ prayers. It has the potential to save a huge amount of post-processing time on any special effects shots.

LOLOLOLOLOL! The sigma guy is not even an enthusiast, he barely knows what he is talking about, i thought that kind of people were already out of this business.

SIGMA filed patent of a method about Quattro-like high-speed read-out from Merrill-type sensor for video recording.

Sigma should just sell the Foveon technology to Sony so Sony can finally make it work.

Is Sigma going into the camera business?

      No

    • TurtleCat

They are already into it and have been.

Oh My Lanta! Sometimes my own sarcasms don’t play well here.

Not really what I’m waiting for, I’d prefer higher dynamic range.
That is hat Quattro is missing

Sigma is obviously best known for lenses

Since Sony currently has no long FE lenses this is an opportunity for Sigma to be first

Sigma should build a 200-600 f4.5-5.6 and teleconverters for Sony FE mirrorless cameras

Someday Sony will probably get thier act together and build such a lens….. but they have not yet done so , and since the A7Riii has good enough autofocus to handle long lenses these lenses should be available

The A7Riii will have full continuous tracking at F8 and still autofocus at F11 but not quite as effectively as F8

A 4.5-6.6 lens would allow use with 1.4x (F8) and still have limited autofocus ability with 2x (F11)

And by the time sigma developed a lens like that Sony will have moved on from the camera business and some other company will take the alpha brand to make it wither away for tax purposes.

Sony has been doing much better than Nikon….and Sony is the world leader in sensors…..they will always build cameras even if just to maintain more credibility for building sensors

Nikon has been consistently losing market share, laying off workers and closing plants in order to slash costs enough to continue to show a profit…this is not sustainable….and Nikon is much more likely to fail than Sony

        • this should make your decision very easy, no need to repeat the same thing over and over….
