Sony RX100VA (RX100M5A) camera announced in the US

Over a month ago Sony announced their new RX100VI camera (24-200mm f/2.8-4.5 for $1,198).

Three weeks later Sony introduced the RX100VA (RX100M5A) version in Japan and Australia which was basically a paid firmware to the RX100V - have you ever seen another company to sell a second version (A) of the fifth generation (V) of the same camera model (RX100)?

Today the Sony RX100VA (RX100M5A) is also officially announced in the US. If you find all this confusing, here is the current RX100 line of cameras (yes, you can buy them all - all RX100 models are still available for sale):

  • Sony RX100: 28-100mm f/1.8-4.9 for $368
  • Sony RX100II: 28-100mm f/1.8-4.9 for $548
  • Sony RX100III: 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 for $648
  • Sony RX100IV: 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 for $798
  • Sony RX100V 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 for $898
  • Sony RX100VA: 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 for $998
  • Sony RX100VI: 24-200mm f/2.8-4.5 for $1,198

The Sony RX100VA improvements over the RX100V are:

  • faster processing
  • better high ISO performance
  • improved AF
  • some menu changes
  • reduced EVF display lag
  • other minor improvements
  • buffer size increased to 233 images
