New Olympus 500mm MFT lens is in development

The Japanese website Newswitch published an interview with Olympus executive officer Shigemi Sugimoto. Here is the recap:

  • In 2018 Olympus could not launch more new products because of their factory relocation
  • Olympus wants to continue to launch new cameras in the entry, middle and high-end level
  • A new super-telephoto lens that reaches 1000mm in full-frame equivalent is under development and it will reach 2000mm with a 2x teleconverter (basically a new Olympus 500mm MFT lens)
  • The real value of MTF lies in mobility and image stabilization... that's about it
  • The Olympus PEN cameras have been very week received by women.
  • Olympus is considering automating lens production. There are many areas that require high-precision work and it is difficult to replace with robots.
