What is AV1 Image File Format (AVIF)?

What is AV1 Image File Format (AVIF):

"AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) is an encoding based on the open source AV1 video codec. AVIF is even newer—than WebP, only supported in Chrome and Opera since 2020, Firefox in 2021, and Safari in 2022. As with WebP, AVIF aims to address every conceivable use case for raster images on the web: GIF-like animation, PNG-like transparency, and improved perceptual quality at file sizes smaller than JPEG or WebP." (WebDev)

"AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) is an open, royalty-free image file format specification for storing images or image sequences compressed with AV1 in the HEIF container format.[1] It competes with HEIC, which uses the same container format built upon ISOBMFF, but HEVC for compression. Version 1.0.0 of the AVIF specification was finalized in February 2019.

In a number of tests by Netflix in 2020, AVIF showed better compression efficiency than JPEG as well as better detail preservation, fewer blocking artifacts and less color bleeding around hard edges in composites of natural images, text, and graphics." (Wikipedia)

"It’s not often that you find better quality for a lower cost. But the Alliance for Open Media’s AVIF format represents a much-needed improvement on the JPEG format developed in the 1990s. While there are other alternatives, including PNG, GIF, and WebP, they all have serious shortcomings that the AVIF format overcomes.

The quality of AVIF images is noticeably superior to JPEG. Thanks to smaller file sizes AVIF images render more quickly in browsers, speeding up the experience of internet users, especially when they’re on mobile browsers. Smaller file sizes also ease the pain of monthly data caps and finite hardware storage limits on phones." (Aomedia)
