Sharp joins Micro Four Thirds before the official announcement of their 8k camera


Today Sharp officially joined Micro Four Thirds which means the official announcement of the Sharp Micro Four Thirds 8k camera is coming soon (the camera was rumored to be announced at the 2019 NAB show). Here is what we know so far about the new Sharp 8k camera:

  • 8k at 30 fps in H.265 codec (Sharp is working on 60 fps)
  • Price under $5,000 (update: priced between $2,800 – $3,700)
  • No sensor info besides Micro Four Thirds format
  • 5″ inch touchscreen display (swivel)
  • 1 SD card slot
  • On sensor stabilization
  • Ultra-compact BMC design
  • Looks like the Blackmagic Pocket camera
  • Not officially announced yet (a prototype was shown at CES)
  • The official announcement is expected at the 2019 NAB show
  • The camera will be released this summer
  • Foxconn and Sharp were considering to invest in RED to develop an affordable 8K camera

Sharp Joins in the Micro Four Thirds System Standard Group

Olympus Corporation and Panasonic Corporation jointly announced the Micro Four Thirds System standard in 2008 and have since been working together to promote the standard. We are pleased to announce that Sharp Corporation has recently declared
their support for the Micro Four Thirds System standard and will be introducing products compliant with the standard.

As the driving force behind 8K imaging technology and a product developer, Sharp Corporation now supports the Micro Four Thirds standard. In the future, Sharp will add Micro Four Thirds products to their line-up. The possibilities unique to a joint standard will expand the enjoyment of imaging further.
