Where is the Zeiss ZX1 camera?

The Zeiss ZX1 full-frame camera was announced in September 2018 and shipments were supposed to start in early 2019. As of September 2019, the Zeiss ZX1 is nowhere to be found. The camera is still listed at B&H Photo and at the official Zeiss website but I am not sure what is going on – a simple delay or maybe a cancelation? Zeiss should explain the situation with a press release like may other companies do.

Here is what we know so far about the Zeiss ZX1 camera:

  • 37.4 MP sensor (developed by Zeiss)
  • ISO range 80-51,200
  • Shutter 30-1/8000 (with a silent operation)
  • Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm f/2 Lens
  • The camera has AF but there is a MF switch on the lens.
  • Min focus distance of 30cm
  • Very simple (and minimalistic) design with 2 dials and a shutter button – the rest of the control is done via the 4.3″ touchscreen with Tool Bar
  • 0.74x Full HD OLED electronic viewfinder (1080p resolution)
  • Continuous shooting 3fps
  • Video: 4K @30p (1080p @ 60p). 15 min limit per clip
  • No memory card slot – 512GB of internal flash storage
  • USB-C for charging and image transfer to a computer
  • Other connections include HDMI/headphone and mic
  • Built-In Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Integrated Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC (user can start edit in camera and continue on the computer).
• Online sharing options (currently e-mail/dropbox and facebook (Zeiss is working on more options before the camera will reach the market).
  • Weight: 1.76 lb / 800 g with battery.
  • Zeiss ZX1 camera price rumored to be priced around $4,200
  • The design and development of the ZX1 are completely done in-house.
  • The ZX1 project started four years ago.
  • The ZX1 has a slight bend on the rear cover glass that provides a natural separation between the live view area on the screen and the toolbar area on the right.
  • The ZX1 runs on Android – the startup time is the same as a smartphone: “The very first boot-up sequence takes a while, but when the camera is up and running, a single push of the dial sleeps the camera but doesn’t turn it off. So the sensor is not running, the screen is off, and very little power is being used. But when you want to take a picture you just nudge the switch again and it wakes up. I think in sleep mode, during a whole day you can expect something like 10% battery drain.”
  • The ZX1 has a mechanical (up to 1/1000) and electronic shutter
  • The ZX1 doesn’t have an exposure compensation dial
  • Leaf Shutter and Physical Exposure Dials
