Sony announced the development of a new Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZA SSM full frame lens (Alpha mount) that is scheduled to be released in Spring of 2013. The filter size will be 72mm as you can see from the picture above. No other information is available at this point.

Wow… 72mm for a 50/1.4 lens. The bokeh must be good.

      Indeed

72mm filter thread only tells us that its gonna be huge and fat thanks to SSM motor that the regular Planar f1.4 is wrapped in.
Bokeh should be the same as current one…

lol. Even I see that it’s completely new design and I’m not an optical engineer. This lens have NOTHING to deal with current Planar 50 f/1.4.

Oh my! Biggie like the sigma bokelicious…. this must be good…. competition is getting really good… Nice move from sony. As usual for a zeiss lens, this will come at a high price :D.

What’s with the MF/AF switch? Is it a toggle switch AND a push-button? Would be a nice feature…

    • Sky

Button is for DMF. Like on the other Zeiss ZA lenses.

or AF lock, which i like better because it keeps the AF from hunting once you already have a focus point. then you can keep pressing the shutter button repeatedly without delays.

hope it is just as good as my Zeiss 85mmf1.4ZA and Zeiss 24f2ZASSM.

I have the Zeiss ZF 50mm 1.4. At 1.4, meh. But by 2.0 it’s fantastic (for me). I wonder if this is the same formula as the ZF and ZE. If so, it’s going to be a great thing for Sony Alpha shooters. Getting a little jealous…in a good way :-)

This could be a completely different design, in fact, it probably is. For instance, the ZA 85mm 1.4 is not the same design as the ZE and ZF 85mm 1.4. I don’t know why this is.

It’s just nice to see a German company designing (manufacturing?) more DSLR/SLR lenses. Hhhmmm, I wonder if LEICA is listening – I mean because they didn’t see a market for the R system or the lenses for that matter. The nits.

haha, this would be epic – Leica building lenses for Sony along with Zeiss. All of best-of-the-best glass with one bayonet. But we all know this won’t happen :)

“All of best-of-the-best glass with one bayonet.”

Great… with the SLT mirror creating ghosting what more could make it more perfect! :P

ghosting? I don’t think so. I have an A77 and the image quality is superb.

Looks like an old Helios 44-2

I’m hoping this lens will be matched perfectly to the outstanding Zeiss Planar 85mm f/1.4 for Sony alpha mount. It’s my go to portrait lens, and I wish that my Minolta 50mm f/1.4 matched it better. And by “matched” I mostly mean the colour cast of the Minolta. It may just be my copy, but its images are much greener than my other lenses’ images are. And that includes the Zeiss 24-70mm as well as the Minolta 35mm f/2 and the Minolta 100mm Macro f/2.8 D lens. Those lenses all seem to match quite well in colour cast and in contrast. If the new Planar 50mm is half as good as the 85mm, I’ll be picking one up for sure!
