Pentax DA 560mm f/5.6 lens to be announced at Photokina

Pentax will announce their new DA 560mm f/5.6 lens at Photokina. The design will be slightly different from the prototype we have seen few months ago. The peculiarity of this lens is the possibility to disassemble/collapse it for easy transportation. The lens is very long for its focal length in order to keep the price down - a long focus design provides lower optical aberrations without raising cost. The price is still unknown, but it is expected to be lower than similar lenses from other manufacturers. The Pentax DA 560mm f/5.6 lens is expected to be in stores in the first quarter of 2013.

Come on nikon, why can’t you make something like this, id pay $5000 for a nikon 600mm f/5.6 but i think that might be a fair bit less than they would sell it for

    • James

Shhhhh! Don’t say tell Pentax that. A lot of people are hoping for sub-3K.

      • David

Yes, in fact I think a lot more people will buy it if it is under $3K. I don’t think I actually NEED one, but I’m still thinking about getting one anyway if the price is reasonable enough. And the fact that I and others are even considering it is huge, considering I’ll probably be looking at a new body around the same time. I have a good kit already, but either one alone would cost more than I’ve ever spent before on a single piece.

I think they should keep the price low as an incentive for others to adopt or stay with the brand. It fills the only major hole they currently have in their lens lineup (with the exception of super-fast 200mm+ glass, but I’m not sure they even want to be the brand that has this, at least yet).

Some thing like K-3 in addition and I’ll drop my sony and minolta 400/4.5 for it.

  • BornOptimist

It will probably also be available in different colors like white, black, red and silver

  • faceab

will tokina make it available for other bands?

    • .scorp

Pentax is no more Hoya property, so I would say no

  • Sky_walker

    Looks like Minolta/Sony tele lens.
Thought Pentax got black lenses – like Nikon. At least 300m from Pentax I seen was black.
That’s the first modern white lens from Pentax? (it seems like decades ago they got some white lenses after all – at least according to google)

  • If it’s pretty long can easily collapsible, it’s probably not a real telephoto… not complaining… just saying. Hope they’ve used good glass to keep the CA low.

  • What’s a Pentax?

Pentax still uses SDM (Sudden Death) Motors, you couldn’t give me this lens for free. The Pentax repair network is non-existent and if you buy Pentax you will need repairs sooner than later.

    Pentax = Junk

    • What,s a Pentax 6×7?

What’s a Pentax? – my deep condolences, bro. I know how deep these things cut!
When I were a lad me Dad’s Pentax 6×7 overbalanced his tripod when he tried out his new 800mm f4 lens for the first time. The whole shebang toppled over and crushed my pet hamster and I’ve hated those 6x7s ever since. But – sweet vengeance for Hammy – those noisy backfiring beasts are now defunct. Still break out in sweats when I see one on ebay.
      Peace bro.

The Pentax DA* 16-50 f2.8 did have some problems with the SDM Motor but since Pentax is #1 in custome service of all the camera Co.’s they get fixed and most have never seen a problem since. I have never had a problem with any of my SDM Lenses. And the Pentax K-5 is still one of the top 5 DSLR’s on the market. Just because Pentax dosen’t waste millions on advertising dosen’t mean they arn’t a great camera. They are the best weather resistant camera system on the market.. allso, I can use any lens they ever made on any of my DSLR’s.
Remember….It’s not the camera that takes the shot it’s the idiot behind the lens.

I agree all of that text!

Being able to disassemble isn’t totally new, some of the manual focus Nikon superteles worked the same way. They actually had several “head” and “base” units that you could combine to make different focal lengths.

If Nikon made one of these, FX, with a fast AF-S motor in it, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. I shoot with a 500/4 right now, but have to rent it per event, which really adds up, and it’s a big lens that’s a pain to transport. Between the modern FX bodies’ low light ability and the fact that I mostly shoot at slow shutter speeds in daylight (panning shots), the slow aperture wouldn’t be a big problem either.

Don’t hate the haters. Small minds.

I’d wager none of these Canikon lovers have ever had a K-5 in their hands. Dudes, it leaves money in your pocket for other things, like hookers and smack!
