Sigma 25mm f/1.4 MFT lens patent

Sigma filed a patent (2013-3324) in Japan for a 25mm f/1.4 lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. Sigma currently has a 19mm f/2.8 and 30mm f/2.8 lenses for MFT. Both models are currently on sale at 50% off (two lenses for the price of one).

Panasonic also recently filed a patent  for a new 25mm f/1.4 Summilux lens to replace their current Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH model. The design of the patented lenses is very similar:

This Sigma Patent is the Pana-Leica 25mm F1.4, Sigma designed, Panasonic Made Leica named. there are many other patents where its clear Olympus and Panasonic and Leica worked with Sigma. the 90-250mm F2.8, the full 4/3rds 25/1.4, the 75-300, 18-180, 40-150, to name a few.

Good catch. It does look strikingly similar.
So what’s the other design then? Looks like a low-cost alternative. Of course it may never see production.

Yes a lower cost (to make) version, based on the same design concept, but with 2 fewer elements, I hope its a cheaper lens for the consumer also.

Let’s hope the Sigma 25mm is reasonably prices. If it is, and is as nice as their 19mm 2.8, I will be seriously tempted.

you might want to read the comments, its the exact same lens as the Pana-Leica 25mm F1.4 as in Sigma designed it, Panasonic made it and Leica put their name on it. this is not a new lens its just the patent of the existing lens becoming open to the public.

  • Usually Sigma can fit into dual system : M4/3 and E-mount. Just hope it can cover APS-C and make a E-mount version. Then a 37.5mm f/1.4 medium wide len is done and is more attractive for snapshot.
