Canon’s 120MP sensor is nothing new

canon-cmos-sensor-120-megapixels The 120MP CMOS APS-H sensor Canon has on display at the 2015 CP+ show is nothing new - it was already officially announced back in 201o. The 2.2 µm pixel pitch sensor (29.2mm x 20.2mm, 13280x9184 pixels) can get 9.5fps "made possible by reading multiple pixels simultaneously at high speeds - a process Canon is calling parallel signal processing'".

    Momma mia, thatsa lotta MP.

  • Nikos Delhanidis

so ? and why wont make an APS-H DSLR with it ?

    • SimenO1

It probably consumes way to much power (needs active cooling) and is way to expensive for mass production (low yield). Its a lens manufacturing tool used for high precicion optical quality control in the assembly lines.

      • Oberoth

You are right, it has (or at least had) massive over heating issues.

      • Dmitry Anisimov

in a DSLR, sensor works only once per shot so overheating issue is irrelevant.

  • Neopulse

I remember reading about this announce (forgot it was 120MP though). But why would they display this if this won’t see the light of day?

    • fjfjjj

For the same reason the auto industry has been displaying solar-powered cars with covered wheel wells for 30 years…?

      • Zos Xavius

Not true. This clearly is a sensor designed with industrial and scientific applications in mind. Not every sensor is designed to be crammed into a tiny hand held box. Its possible canon hasn’t found a potential buyer for it yet or just wants to trot it around because ZOMG 120mp. Wake me up when they can produce a chip with more than 12 stops of DR and no shadow banding.

        • fjfjjj

Yes true. Buyers of industrial and scientific image sensors don’t have CP+ on their trade show list. This sensor, whatever its target market, is on display for consumer PR.

  • Global

Sounds like a dare. Sony will make a better one that actually works with good DR shortly enough.

  • Paco Ignacio

“Canon’s 120MP sensor is nothing new”

    As everything from Canon.

  • sickheadache

Well yes Canon was out of the gate first with 50mp…but it will be Nikon and Sony who truly give the consumers the first 50mp plus mirrorless and dslr camera…

    • Yawn

You should not post when you are in that state.

What will they think of next?

  • SimenO

Maby a stupid question, but what stops sensor producers from choosing 1,1 micron pixels in large sensors? Yield?
