What to expect @ PMA 2010

PMA 2010 is one of the major photography related shows in the US. This year the event will take place in Anaheim, California from February 21-23.

Many new photography products will be announced prior and during PMA. Here is a brief recap on what to expect based on previously reported rumors (click on each link for the corresponding article):

Panasonic: two point and shoot models and a Lumix G replacement.

Olympus: multiple point and shoot cameras, nothing else.

Pentax: three new compact cameras with some interesting design.

Sony: series of point and shoot cameras and α700 replacement.

Ricoh: new CX2 camera and a new 28-300 GXR lens.

Samsung: a new k-mount for the Samsung NX-10 is expected, don’t have any other information at that point.

Tamron: maybe two new lenses (“maybe” because the announcement could be after PMA).

Hasselblad: a new service for photographers should be announced.

Fuji: maybe a new m4/3 EVIL model, otherwise some new digital and maybe film cameras.

Leica: nothing for PMA, but expect a new 35mm Summilux M lens in March and some new compact cameras (fyi: Leica is not attending PMA 2010).

Canon: 1Ds4 and 60D and maybe three new lenses. Canon should have an announcement on February 9th.

Nikon: well, I have a whole blog for that – too much to mentioned it all here, but Coolpix S8000, Coolpix P100, Coolpix S3000 and Coolpix S8000 are expected.

Pentax Optio H90 and Optio L10 cameras

An update on the last Pentax rumors: those images were briefly displayed on a retailer website today and then were quickly removed but thanks to Google cache, I was able to retrieve them – here are the Pentax Optio L10 and Pentax Optio H90 looking good:

There was a third template for another Pentax camera but the image was not downloadable.

Pentax will announce new Optio cameras next week

On Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 Pentax will announce new set of Optio point and shoot cameras (the exact date may be +/- 1 day depending on your geo location). Three or four new cameras are expected. No m4/3 or EVIL models. I do not have any details at that point, but I was told that technologically there will be nothing new and exciting, instead Pentax have decided to emphasize on the design (you can see how previous Option cameras models look like). One of the Optio models will have special retro design and is expected to draw some serious attention @ PMA.

What will Fuji do?

There were several reports on Fuji joining the m4/3 gang at PMA 2010 (see here and here). At that point I still do not have any confirmation on those rumors, but I am sure Fuji will announce new digital (and maybe film) cameras in the next 2-3 weeks. Expect the emphasis to be on their EXR sensor.

Hasselblad update

Few weeks ago Hasselblad started a mysterious counter and now they added some more teasers on their website:

Clearly this will not be about new equipment. My guess is something like an online social media service for photographer/clients or maybe a joint venture with some of the big social networking sites. What say you?

The countdown is to February 1st, 2010:

New Ricoh GXR “slide-in” piece: is it real?

Update: here is another photoshopped solution for Leica M lenses on Ricoh GXR.

This picture of a new “slide-in” lens piece for the Ricoh GXR was on the front cover of a Japanese magazine – if anyone owns a copy, I would like to know more about the content inside:

More details on the upcoming Panasonic ZS-7, TS2 cameras

The previously rumored camera model will be called Panasonic ZS-7 (not sure if they will use the same model name in the US). Some more detailed specs emerged today (Google translated – not sure how accurate this translation is):

  • HD video with 720p 30fps
  • Built-in stereo microphone
  • 12x optical enabled zoom
  • New IS system in camera
  • New, dedicated movie mode button
  • New implementation of the exposure button for easier manual settings
  • Built-in GPS: each photo will be tagged with the geo-location and time stamp and those parameters will be searchable
  • SDXC cards compatible
  • HDMI and USB ports
  • New digital zoom solution – it will guarantee high resolution images, without any loss of quality even when using digital zoom

The second expected camera will be the Panasonic TS2 (replacement of the Panasonic TS1). Again, the translation is not easy to understand, but it seems that this camera can survive very deep waters, free fall from substantial height and operate under some extreme weather conditions.

No word on the G model yet.

Expected release: end of January, beginning of February 2010.
