Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM announced

sigma-17-70-lens-osUpdate: the price of the new lens is $449 – see all pre-order options here (different mounts).

Reported 2 days ago, the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM is now real. Here is the full press release:

The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the new Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM. This large aperture standard zoom lens offers an aperture of F2.8 at the 17mm focal length and is ideal for many situations such as portraits, sports, macro and general photography. The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. For Sony and Pentax mount, the built-in OS function of this lens can be used even if the camera body is equipped with an anti-shake function. As the compensation for camera shake is visible in the view finder, the photographer can easily check for accurate focus and ensure there is no subject movement. The maximum aperture of F2.8 produces an attractive background blur and improves autofocus speed. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 22cm(8.7in.) throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7, making it ideal for close-up photography. It is possible to focus as close as approximately 4.7cm(1.9in.) from the tip of the lens to the subject making this lens particularly useful for close-up photography.Three aspherical lenses and one ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass element provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet and high speed AF. This lens has a rounded 7 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image. The inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters.

Canon patents touchscreen DSLR solution

canon-touchscreen-dslr-patent

PhotographyBay found an interesting patent for a touchscreen DSLR filed by Canon. No, you will not change the menu with your nose while shooting – the iPhone works in a similar way: it has a sensor that turns off the touchscreen when you get it close to your face. Here is the suggested solution from Canon:

“Specifically, the camera is supposed to allow users to register their dominant eye.  The photographer will input whether it is the left or right eye. Then the camera will detect the registered eye when it is brought to the viewfinder.  At that point, the camera will disable a portion of the touchscreen that would likely be touched by your face and, therefore, prevent any setting changes.  Also, note that the patent covers the possibility that the camera may automatically detect which eye is brought to the viewfinder and disable the appropriate portion of the LCD.”

The current 17-70 model

Those are the latest Sigma rumors: next week Sigma will announce a new 17-70mm lens with OS (optical stabilizer). The current model sells for around $369, expect the new model to be more expensive.

Next year Sigma is expected to announce a new 70-200mm lens (also with OS) with very high quality glass (probably f/2.8).

The last lens from Sigma was the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG OS (announced on September 4th, 2009).

Nova DSLR camera concept

I am a big fan of camera concepts – in previous posts you can see a Leica S5 concept, Nikon 3M Coolpix concept, Nikon Coolpix 360 and another Coolpix concept. Keep in mind that those concept are created by designers and have nothing to do with real life camera manufacturers (but  they are still so cool). Today I present to you the Nova DSLR camera concept by Erin Fong:
