Samsung 85mm f/1.4 ED SSA lens caught in the wild, to be released in July/August

A beta tester was spotted with the new Samsung 85mm f/1.4 ED SSA lens in Korea. Here is a brief description of the lens given by the tester:

  • very fast AF motor, similar to the speed of Olympus E-3 with 14-54mm lens under daylight
  • no chromatic aberration noticeable on the display with maximum magnification
  • the lens is at its final testing phase
  • the lens is expected to be released in July/August of 2011
  • the price is yet to be determined

The Samsung 85mm f/1.4 ED SSA is one of five new NX lenses announced by Samsung in February of 2011.

Some samples taken with the Samsung 85mm f/1.4 lens can be found here.

wow this lens is gonna be really good. why? because it is the sigma 85 1.4, which is really good.

      ???? Source?

by good you mean, costs more then Nikon 85G, yet AF, DOF and ISO performance of the system will be like D3100 with 55-200mm kit lens.

Isn’t NX mirroless and APS-C? If so why use a retrofocal design for 135 format (full frame)?

    • Rocky

No, it is designed and manufactured by Samsung.

    • 42PL

It’s not the Sigma lens. Did someone tell you it was? If so, they were wrong.

Hopefully indeed it will be really good, and Samsung do seem to be aiming higher with this lens than some previous designs, but it is clearly not the same as the Sigma 85mm f1.4. I have no insider knowledge of its exact design but there are already a number of apparent differences – the most obvious being the smaller diameter (67mm vs. 77mm filter thread).

Dang..check out the dude with the ‘Blad in the background.
    What were they photographing?

I think Samsung NX has the potential to be a great system.
At least from their recent photos of prototypes I like the way Samsung thinks.
Seem to be quite photographer-centric in design.
The 85mm f1.4 still looks big on the NX system. Is it native for NX mirrorless or converted from DSLR retrofocal designs?
If NX native, why’s it still so big? Isn’t NX APS-C only?

Perhaps Samsung has a full-frame mirror-less body in the works? If Samsung wants to break new grounds, this would be the way to do it.

I wondered the same thing. What the hell. He’s even got an SB unit on it! I lol’d

the samsung 85mm f1.4 is probably so big because they wanted best image quality with the easiest construction?

maybe they will also release something slower and smaller (all brands have 1.4 and 1.8 85mm primes)

would be cool if samsung would come up with a pancake like tele prime.
like the pentax 70mm f2.4 for example

Too bad there’s no OS. Minimum shutter speed would be around 1/120, especially when using the rear LCD.

    • Mistral75

There is no ultra fast lens with OS, not even the brand new Nikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.4G.

  • wow was the first word out of my mouth

  • This is interesting. Let’s see how it does, though.
