Sony 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM lens leaked

Sony Europe leaked a picture of the upcoming Sony 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM (Super Sonic Motor) lens. This will probably be a DT (Digital Technology) lens for use on cameras with APS-C sensors.

    SAM = Smooth Autofocus Motor (just a built-in AF motor)
    SSM = Super Sonic Motor

    A lens that’ll suffer from zoom creep (else there’d be no reason for a lock). That’s sad. The 18 135 I own (pentax) doesn’t need such a lock and it’s really great to use !

      The new 16-50 from sony has a lock for when its set to its wodest focal length and for no other reason, oh and it doesnt have lens creep. at all.

      I think that *is* the Pentax 18-135 lens, just rebadged. (Keep reading…)

      Looks like the same size, specs, curious rear focus ring position, “DC” or “SAM” motor, and even the zoom guide numbers are identical (same helicoid?). But the AF/MF switch means it didn’t retain the Pentax “quick shift” focus clutch. Most likely this is another lens produced by Tokina under the old agreement with Pentax/Hoya. Pentax is owned by Ricoh now, so Tokina can probably shop these designs around… it’s a very nice lens, BTW.

    What is DT – for DSLR or for NEX?

    • Slaven

      For DSLR with APS-c-sized sensor.
      Lenses for NEX are marked with SEL prefix.

    If the price is right and quality is as good as the 18-55 kit, this will be a great addition to the lineup. Should be a useful walkaround lens.
