What to expect from Fujifilm, Olympus, Sony, Panasonic and Nikon for the 2013 CES show

new Fuji superzoom compact camera

Here is quick update on what to expect from Fujifilm, Olympus, Sony, Panasonic and Nikon for the CES show (January 8-11 2013):

Fujifilm will announce 5 new FinePix cameras: 3 super zooms, one rugged model and 0ne "regular" compact camera. The top of the line superzoom (pictured above) is rumored to have a very fast AF. I still do not have reliable information about a potential X10 or X100 replacement, but those two cameras are still a possibility.

Olympus will probably announce 6 new point and shoot cameras: 3 rugged models and 3 super zoom cameras (with 24x-48x zooms). None of the new cameras will be high-end or m4/3.

Sony will also introduce several new Cybershot models. I do not have any details, but I also do not expect anything groundbreaking.

Panasonic will announce 10 different compact cameras (via digicame-info):

  • DMC-TS25 (FT series in Japan), 16.1MP sensor, 4x zoom
  • DMC-TS5 (FT series in Japan), 16.1MP sensor, 4.6x zoom
  • DMC-XS1, 16.1MP sensor, 5x zoom
  • DMC-ZS25 (TZ series in Japan), 16.1MP sensor, 20x zoom
  • DMC-ZS30 (TZ series in Japan), 18.2MP sensor, 20x zoom
  • DMC-LZ30, 16.1MP sensor, 35x zoom
  • DMC-SZ3, 16.1MP sensor, 10x zoom
  • DMC-SZ9, 16.1MP sensor, 10x zoom
  • DMC-F5, 14.1MP sensor, 5x zoom
  • DMC-FH10, 16.1MP sensor, 5x zoom

Nikon is rumored to announce new Nikon 1 J3 and S1 mirrorless cameras and two 1 Nikkor lenses: 1 Nikkor 10-100mm f/4-5.6 and 1 Nikkor 6.7-13mm f/3.5-5.6.

“New Fuji…is rumored to have a very PAST AF” – ha ha ha – I believie this mistake is meaningful.

Nikon will not present a replacement of D7000? :/

    • Not for CES I think, maybe later for the CP+ show (February).

Wow, these companies are stuck in the past. Dozens and dozens of anonymous new compact cameras are being released into a market which is shrinking at least as fast as that for photographic film was 10 years ago.

Panasonic’s case is particularly bad. 10 new cameras? It’s a joke. No wonder the company is losing money hand-over-fist.

Move high-end. Release a smartphone. Or close the camera division. Those are the only choices for these companies.

Panasonic released a smartphone earlier this year, the Eluga. Unfortunately, no succes either and they already announced they will withdraws from that market.

Actually Tim, SONY has really found a perfect niche in their RX100, it takes close to DSLR quality photo and video but it fits in your pocket. A lot of enthusiasts don’t even want to be carrying around a lot of equipment wherever they go, just to capture those magic moments when they unexpectedly pop up. A pocketable “DSLR” is exactly what a LOT of people are looking for.

Still no B&W digital camera ? Pffffff come on Fuji, you can do it !

The Fuji superzoom looks like it has a 42x 24-1000mm zoom and the writing on the top looks more like HS40 than XS-2 which would also fit with that focal range as the smaller 1/2.3in sensor of the HS range looks a better bet for going to 1000mm than the larger 2/3in of the XS range. Pity, as the 12mp 2/3in sensor is much better than the 16mp 1/2.3. I’d still consider the camera for birds though.

  • I can see Fuji releasing a mirror-less SLR style camera using XF glass.

    No Nikon p510 superzoom successor?
