RED announced a black and white Epic cinema camera

RED’s CEO Jarred Land announced a black and white version of their Epic cinema camera. The Mysterium-X specs are:

  • Newly Developed Mysterium-X Monochrome Sensor
  • Native ASA 2000
  • Increased net resolution (Removal of the debayer process, so every single individual pixel is used for luminance / image data)
  • New Low Pass Filter with to accomodate the reduced pixel pitch (1×1 vs 2×2 Bayer)
  • $42,000 (brain only) includes upgrade to Dragon Monochrome Sensor spring 2013
  • David Fincher is shooting his current project solely on Epic-M Monochrome cameras as we speak
  • Pre-orders open on RED.COM Monday,ships October 1st

Konica Minolta patents a 43mm f/1.4 lens for Micro Four Thirds

Konica Minolta filed a patent in Japan for a 43mm f/1.4 lens for Micro Four Thirds mount. This is an unusual development because after Sony bought their camera business in 2006, the company has not announced any photography related products (they actually withdrew from the photo business on September 30, 2006 after laying off 3,700 employees).

After the introduction of their first cinema camera at the 2012 NAB show, Blackmagic made headlines again today with the announcement of their new cinema camera with passive Micro Four Thirds mount. The mains specs are: super wide 13 stops of dynamic range, large 2.5K sensor, a built-in SSD recorder.

Pentax K-5 II and K-5 IIs DSLR cameras

Two more leaks: the Pentax K-5 II and Pentax K-5 IIs DSLR cameras will replace the current K-5 model and are expected to hit stores in mid-October. The K-5 II Japanese price is expected to be ¥110,000 (around $1,400) the K-5 IIs will cost around ¥120,000 (around $1,500).

Fujifilm X-E1 sample images, $300 kit savings

Sample images taken with the new Fujifilm X-E1 camera can be found at the new X-E1 dedicated website. Additional samples taken with various XF lenses can be seen on fujifilm.com.

Another interesting development is that if you buy the X-E1 kit (with the 18-55 lens), you will save $300 compared to if you buy camera and the lens separately (see all pre-order options here). Those are exactly the same savings as the recently announced combo offer on the X-Pro1 + lens purchases.

Firmware update v2.00 for the Fujifilm X-Pro1 coming on September 18th *UPDATED*

With all of the buzz surrounding the new Fuji X-E1 camera, I am not sure if you noticed the press release about the previously rumored firmware update for the X-Pro1. There will be four major improvements in v2.00: improved AF and manual focus speed, better operating speed and a new auto-ISO setting of 6400. The new firmware will be available for download on September 18th. The big question is: will the X-Pro1 perform as fast as the X-E1 with the new firmware?
