Sony also filed a patent for a liquid lens

Similar to Samsung, Sony also filed a patent for a liquid lens. Instead of rotating the focus ring, like on a traditional lens, liquid lenses are controlled by electricity that changes the different refractive indexes of the liquid the light passes through:

“Disclosed is a liquid lens element. The liquid lens element includes a main body, a lens surface, and a first reflection surface. The main body has a light incident surface and a light exiting surface and includes a liquid chamber formed therein. The lens surface changes orientation of light that exits the light exiting surface by being electrically deformed, and the lens surface is formed of an interface between two liquids that are contained in the liquid chamber and have refractive indexes. The first reflection surface reflects part of light that enters the light incident surface toward an optical axis of the lens surface, and the first reflection surface is provided to the main body.”

One of the main advantage of liquid lenses is small size and low power consumption which will make them best suited for the cell phone industry.

Few pictures from PDN PhotoPlus Expo 2010

I finally got some time to upload few images from PDN PhotoPlus Expo 2010 that ended last week.

Pentax

Pentax had a big table (not really a booth) with all of their latest products, including the 645D. You can download a sample RAW file taken with the 645D here (DropBox is great for sharing large files):

Sony

Sony had the second largest booth on the show (after Canon) and there had a lot of equipment on display as well as presentations and even some BMX action:

Pentax K-5 firmware update will be released soon

Pentax K-5

Pentax K-5

Pentax is expecting to release new firmware update for the latest K-5 DSLR camera. The update will include:

  1. Increases the number of continuous shot at RAW and RAW+ mode (setting condition: RAW(PEF)/ISO100, increases the number of continuous shot from maximum approx. 8 frames to approx. 20 frames)
  2. Improved stability for general performance.

Update: ok, I was wrong – the Nikon D7000 scored 80 points, 2 points lower than the K-5. Pentax remains the leader (even though I think the K-5 should be compared with the D300s replacement and not with the D7000).

Photoshop expands to mobile devices

There have been few hints in the past about a potential Adobe Lightroom version for the iPad (see here and here). In their latest presentation, Adobe showed content-aware fill on an Android tablet and paint mixing on an iPad that can be wirelessly transferred to your computer:

It seems that the direction Adobe is taking, is to use mobile devices as an additional tool to Photoshop instead of creating standalone mobile applications (they already have PS Express app). MacRumors showed some mockups on how those Photoshop tools may look on iPad and iPhone:

Olympus wants to buy a cell phone company

I am not sure if this is just an investment move for Olympus or they are really planning to release something like the Panasonic Lumix Phone, but here is the news – Olympus wants to buy a cell phone company:

“Olympus Corp. said Friday that it will launch a tender offer for ITX Corp. to turn the cellular phone sales unit into a wholly owned subsidiary. Olympus currently holds an 82.07% stake in ITX. The cost of acquiring the ITX shares that it does not own will likely come to about 7 billion yen.”
