There are some old rumors that have been going around again about an upcoming Sony medium format camera. Here is the recap I recently received from a new source:
- Sony has plans to enter the medium format camera market.
- In the next two years, Sony is rumored to introduce a medium format camera with a 150MP and/or 200MP 54x36mm sensor, which is 2.25 times larger than the full-frame 36x24 sensor.
- Price: $7,500 and $9,999 respectively (for 150MP and 200MP).
- The new medium format camera(s) may use a new curved sensor (there have been some patents for that). Because of the curved sensor, only prime lenses will be available.
- Sony is also rumored to release a specialized adapter for installing Sony E lenses on the new medium format camera system.
- Three medium format lenses are expected at the announcement.
- Expect a bizarre model name, something like A7M I and A7M II.
- The development announcement could happen at the same time as the A7r V (June 2021?).
I personally don't put much faith in those reports, but I have been wrong in the past. Also, similar rumors about a medium format Sony camera have been going around for a while:
