Latest sensor developments

InVisage Technologies created a sensor using quantum dots instead of silicon for phone cameras. According to the company, this would increase the sensor performance more than four times.

Just a month ago Dalsa announced a 196MP sensor which will be used in “UltraCam line of aerial photogrammetry cameras produced by Vexcel Imaging GmbH, a subsidiary of Microsoft. The new UltraCamXp and UltraCamXp Wide Angle use multiple Dalsa CCD image sensors to provide breathtakingly detailed imagery that feeds applications such as Microsoft Bing Maps”. 196MP not enough for you? Then check out this 570MP intergalactic camera.

Also a month ago, Samsung announced a 3MP CMOS sensor for camera phones, capable of recording 720p video (source). At the same time NEC announced an image processor for cameras phones that can handle Full HD (1080p) videos and 13MP photos (source).

How about that one: OmniVision has announced a new RAW-capable CMOS sensor for cellphones (source).

Samsung NX5 appears on a Swedish online store

The Swedish online retail site multitronic.se lists a mysterious Samsung NX5 model and  the price appears to be lower then the current NX10 model (In 2010 Samsung is expected to release a new, cheaper version of the NX10 camera):

Canon working on a mirrorless camera (EVIL)

This information was published in the Japanese trade journal Pen News Weekly quoting Photo Trade Express where reportedly an unnamed Canon officer said:

“Canon is proceeding with the development of a mirror-less interchangeable lens camera to compete against models launched by Panasonic, Olympus and Samsung.”

Pentax 645D will start shipping on May 20th in Japan

According to Amazon Japan, Pentax 645D will start shipping on May 20th, 2010:

The price is ¥848,000 with tax (around $9370). Amazon Japan does not ship electronics to other countries (for now the 645D will be sold only in Japan). Some other sites, like JapanTrendShop.com will probably offer shipping outside Japan for a premium.
