OLED/AMOLED screens coming to a camera near you

The rumored Samsung NX3 camera will not be be the first camera with an AMOLED display (there is no substantial difference between OLED & AMOLED – Active Matrix is just a way of controlling individual pixels). OLED screens are already available on several models (as production costs are dropping): Nikon just released a p&s camera with a touchscreen OLED display: the Nikon S70. The first camera with an OLED screen was the Samsung TL320. It is interesting that such improvement were first introduced in the lower level products instead of pro-models. Samsung is considered to be the OLED leader in the industry. Here is a comparison between AMOLED and TFT screens:

Outside the camera world several cell phones and the next Zune HD are expected to have OLED screens.

Some of the OLED screen advantages are:

  • Very thin and lighter weight
  • Greatly minimized propensity for breakage
  • Lower-power, highly rugged with superior image quality, and low cost compared to the current LCD displays
  • Due to their inherent ruggedness, allow a unique form factor of conformability and rollability during use, transportation and storage.

Samyang to continue releasing new, fast lenses

Samyang is going to announce several new lenses in Q1 2010: two version of 35 mm for FF with max aperture f/1.4 for Nikon, Pentax, Sony and maybe Olympus 4/3. The second version with max aperture of f/1.2 will be only for Canon. Canon bayonet has a bigger diameter which will make this possible. It is expected those lenses to be with an ED element and at least one aspherical lens.

Here is the current offering from Samyang on Amazon and their prices.

Interview with Sony’s CMOS Exmor R sensor developers

sony-exmor-r-sensorUpdate: hit the comments section for a better translation.

This is the Google translation of the interview. The interesting part:

Q: As many users are interested, I would have to be equipped with a digital SLR camera. 2 the idea of sensitivity so you can take pictures which is twice less noise, I would simply think, including me, what are not going so easily.

A: Yes, because this type 1/2.4 small pixel size has been achieved the sensitivity of two-fold. Digital SLR camera I have I was much more pixel size. It is easy to collect the light from that case, two times the sensitivity of a sudden you’re not.

Mu understand of the last sentence is that the Exmor R sensor will not be so efficient in a DSLR. Anybody got a better translation?

This is according to Pentax’s President of US Operations Ned Bunnell. Expected release date: early 2010.

I guess the Pentax K2Ds rumor is now busted.
