I received some reports that Zeiss and Sony lenses will be going up in price in the US on February 1st, 2011. Not sure if all lenses will be impacted or what exactly the price increase will be (expecting to get a price list later today or tomorrow).

Did you hear about this WVIL camera? (updated, but still a hoax)

Update: a reader was able to located the website that has more info on this “camera”: www.artefactgroup.com/wvil. If you look at the main page (www.artefactgroup.com),  Artefactgroup is design firm out of Seattle.

According to the YouTube video below, this camera concept was shown on CES 2011 and since I could not find any coverage online, I have to conclude that it was a hoax. What do you think?

CES 2011 recap

CES 2011 is now over. Many compact cameras were announced, but the stars of the show IMHO were the Olympus E-PL2 and Olympus XZ-1. Dpreview has a samples gallery of the Olympus XZ-1. A hands-on of the Olympus E-PL2 can be found on AP. Both Olympus E-PL2 and Olympus XZ-1 cameras are now available for pre-order.

Here is some additional coverage:

  • DSLR magazine reports that Panasonic will release a new, optimized for video lens 12-50mm f/2.5-3.3 and Olympus will announce a new M4/3 PRO camera and lenses probably in the second quarter of 2011.
  • AP reports that the Sony a700 replacement will probably be released this year (2011) and “it would definitely use the translucent mirror technology”, a better EVF, up to 25MP sensor, high ISO settings “up into the hundreds of thousands”, magnesium alloy body and price in the range of $1200.

Two interchangeable lens cameras are expected from Pentax in 2011

In an interview published by dpreview, Pentax said that they have not ruled out a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera: “If a product makes sense, and is feasible economically, we’ll come out with it”.

Here is some interesting information I received: Pentax is currently working on two different cameras with interchangeable lenses. The first one will be a digital version of the Pentax Auto 110 wich is actually a tiny SLR type camera (pictured below):

It is not yet clear if old 110 lenses will be compatible with the new digital version.

The second camera will be a “pure” EVIL (electronic viewfinder, interchangeable lenses) version. Announcement could happen as yearly as March of 2011.

A water proof point and shoot camera with built-in GPS will also be announced in 2011. This will be the first Pentax camera with GPS.
