Sony will have a photography related press conference on September 23rd

sony-exmor-r-sensorI have no confirmation yet, but the press conference may be related to the Twilight Football event that promotes Sony’s Exmor R CMOS sensor. Not sure if new products will be announced on that event. At that point the Exmor R CMOS sensor technology is impplemented only in Handycams and the Cybershot WX1. Stay tuned for more.

New Sony full frame sensor CCD SuperHAD II with 34.8MP

I received the following anonymous tip about the new full frame (35mm) CCD SuperHAD II sensor with 34.8 mega pixels. It is expected to come out the next year in a high resolution studio Alpha camera. This camera is expected to be the same level as the Leica S2 (but much cheaper I guess). No anti-aliasing filter, electronic shutter with high flash sync with a new anti-blooming structure. Also, new Carl Zeiss and Sony G prime lenses will be announce with this camera. There is some more information on Sony’s website for this CCD SuperHAD II sensor.

I will say it again: Sony is very aggressive in the DSLR market and should not be underestimated. They already have capture some significant market share and imho this trend will continue in the future. The big question is who will be the market share looser(s)?

Ritz Camera no longer does business with Sigma (rumor)

This could be based on the rumor that Nikon injected an undisclosed amount of money in Ritz Camera in order to bring it back to life. Maybe this is now Nikon’s payday – they will not carry Sigma lenses any longer.

I did a search on Ritz website for Sigma:

“Canon will make one of its largest and most important launches in the company’s history”

What is Canon planing to announce on 09.29.09?

I guess 09.09.09 is over, but 09.29.09 is also a good date to announce a new product. Canon also thinks so with this new teaser:

Canon-Announcement-Teaser-2009-09-29

Translation:

“During this fall, Canon will make one of its largest and most important launches in the company’s history and we hope you can attend. During a luncheon, you are invited to listen to CEO Jouko Tuouminen, Marketing presiden Monica Forsberg and trend analyst Magnus Lindkvist, talking about tomorrows trends and factors of success in the continually more digitalized everyday life.”

Pretty bold statement. Of course the new product may not be photography related – doesn’t the box looks too big for a camera/lens?

Diagram of new AF system from Sony

Rumor: this new AF system from Sony will be part of the new Alpha 7xx series. Here is what my source was able to recollect:

  • 9 square AF marks
  • all simple cross
  • central double cross (like A 700 and A 900)
  • 10 linear (not selectable or visible) AF assistant
  • all sensors f/4 (yes, no f/5.6)
  • central sensor f/2.8

And this is the diagram I received with that rumor:

Some RED updates/rumors

RED 6×17 camera rumors: I received some information that the Red 617 sensor is currently being tested and there is a working prototype. It is just not capturing at full frame rate for video as of now.
