The latest CIPA report: camera shipments are up this year

CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association in Japan) published their latest report with data from March 2017: in general, the numbers for the first three months of 2017 are better than 2015. For the Interchangeable Lens Digital Still Cameras category, the numbers are even better than 2016 (orange: 2017, black: 2016, blue: 2015 click for larger view):
The latest financial reports from Sony: image sensors are the biggest contributor to profit growth

Sony published their financial reports for the fiscal year ending on March 31st, 2017. A quote from Reuters:
Sony a9 review and comparisons to the Sony a7R II, Canon 1DX II, Nikon D5 and Nikon D500 cameras

Tony & Chelsea Northrup published their Sony a9 camera review with some comparisons to the Sony a7R II, Canon 1DX II, Nikon D5 and Nikon D500 cameras:
If you don’t feel like going through all the 18+ minutes, here is a good recap from reddit:
Camera focuses at least as good as 1DX & D5, but lags behind D500/D5 in terms of lock-on AF/selecting a subject. Tony thinks this isn’t an issue thanks to joystick & eye-AF/face detect that performs the best out of any camera he’s ever used (namely a7rii, a6500, & XT-2). Silent shutter and zero-blackout is a revelation. Buffer is nice a big, but when it fills it will take time to clear which can be frustrating. Battery life not a particularly large issue for a day’s worth of shooting. Vs. A7rII, IQ is not as sharp, but A9 is better in literally every other way. Video capability isn’t quite as revolutionary, however, and is in line with what’s available in an a6500.
The Sony a9 camera is now available for pre-order at: Amazon | Adorama | B&H.
More on the mystery Panasonic video camera at the 2017 NAB show

A few days ago I reported about a new mystery Panasonic video camera that is on display (under a cloth) at the 2017 NAB show. There was no official announcement or unveiling – it seems that the release will be in fall. Here is some additional information courtesy of our friends over at PhotographyBay:
Just announced: 100MP Hasselblad camera and DJI M600 Pro drone combo

Even though the pictures I posted here on the blog a few months ago could have been fake, the report was not far from the truth: DJI and Hasselblad announced the world’s first 100MP “integrated aerial photography platform” that consists of DJI M600 Pro drone ($4,999), Ronin-MX gimbal ($4,594) and the Hasselblad H6D-100c camera ($32,995).
Back in 2014 and 2015 I reported that Hasselblad was in financial trouble and a potential acquisition was a possibility. Then in November 2015 Hasselblad and DJI formed a “strategic partnership”. Neither company ever confirmed or denied the rumors that DJI acquired Hasselblad.
