Ricoh’s patent for a 5.3-22mm f/2-3.5 lens (for 1/1.7″ sensor)

Ricoh filed patent 2012211956 in Japan for a 5.3-22mm f/2-3.5 lens designed for a 1/1.7″ sensor (24-100mm equivalent). The lens design contains 11 elements in 8 groups, including two aspherical elements. This lens could be designed for the Pentax Q system, which has a 1/2.3″ sensor, or for a new GXR module.

Olympus filed patent for a tilt lens

Olympus filed patent 2012-199834 in Japan for a tilt lens similar to a Lensbaby. Based on the patent description, the lens will not be able to “shift”. In addition to Lensbaby, some photographers have also successfully used third party tilt-shift bellows on Olympus m4/3 cameras. Novoflex recently announced new tilt-shift bellows compatible with different mirrorless system via an adapter:

New lenses, curved image sensor patents from Sigma, Canon and Sony

Sigma filed patent 2012-181508 in Japan for 30mm f/2.8, 30mm f/2.5, 45mm f/2.8, 24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/2.8, 55mm f/2.8 mirrorless lenses. Canon filed patent 2012-159723 for a 14mm f/2.8 lens. The design contains 14 elements in 10 groups.

Canon patents for 14mm f/2.8, 300mm f/4, 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 and 28-135mm f/4-5.6 lenses

Two new Canon patents from Japan: 2012-159720 is for a 14mm f/2.8 lens with anti-reflective coating. The next patent 2012-159726 is for a 300mm f/4 lens.

Canon’s patent adds image stabilization to the 24-70mm f/2.8L lens

Canon’s patent 2012123156 adds image stabilization to the 24-70mm f/2.8L lens. Canon has filed 24-70mm f/2.8 lens patents in the past, but this is the first time they added IS to the lens design. Canon recently announced the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II lens, so another update is not likely to come out soon.

The latest lens patents from Ricoh and Olympus

Ricoh filed a patent 2012128045 for 14mm f/2.5 and 19mm f/2.5 lenses (28mm and 35mm equivalent). The interesting part is that the 19mm lens is designed for an APS-C camera (the 14mm lens is for a 4/3inch sensor).
