Olympus AIR A01 smartphone camera module officially announced in the US

As I reported earlier today, Olympus officially announced their AIR A01 smartphone camera module (aka “clip camera”) in the US. The AIR A01 is basically a stand-alone unit that works together with Olympus OA app – this allows you to use your phone as internal memory and display, or upload your photos directly to the cloud (currently Amazon Cloud Drive), or share them, as well as use digital filters and effects on your images through the app, while shooting with interchangeable micro 4/3 lenses. The announcement also includes a M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ lens to go with the new Olympus AIR camera body. Here are the different options available and the corresponding pricing:

Olympus AIR A01 black body only: $299.99
Olympus AIR A01 white body only: $299.99
Olympus AIR A01 black body with 14-42mm black lens: $499.99
Olympus AIR A01 white body with 14-42mm sliver lens: $499.99

Tamron rep: the new full frame Pentax DSLR camera will have a 42MP sensor from Sony

Some interesting rumors coming from a Tamron rep:

Ricoh is going to open a factory service center in the US in 2016.
The new full frame Pentax will have the 42MP Sony sensor from the a7R II.
Tamron will be adding new Pentax K mount lenses because of the above.

The latest patents: Canon full frame mirrorless camera adapter, EF-S 20mm f/2.8 STM and Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 500mm f/4 PRO IS MFT lenses

This is interesting – Canon filed a patent for a EF/EF-S adaptor designed for a full frame mirrorless camera. Recently Nikon also filed a patent for a full frame mirrorless lens. So yes, it seems that the Sony a7 will not be the only show in town soon.

Canon has also a new patent for EF-S 20mm f/2.8 STM lens for APS-C cameras.

Hassleblad will no longer produce rebadged Sony cameras

In a recent interview with dpreview, Hassleblad’s CEO Perry Oosting said that they will stop producing Sony rebadge products like the Lusso, Stellar, Lunar, HV and Solar (dpreview said they “need to be exorcised“). The Hasselblad Lusso was an exception – it will be available only in Asia (Hong Kong) and it’s a limited edition with fewer than 100 units produced. BTW, the Hassleblad Stellar line (currently $1,300 off) was profitable and actually a very good seller. The CEO said that his company still has a very good relationship with Sony. There is a possibility that Hasselblad may venture into other camera formats in the future (not Sony rebadges this time).
