Canon announcement this week

PhotographyBay got a tip that Canon will have a new product announcement on August 17th, 2010. There is another Canon press event scheduled for August 27th, 2010. Canon will probably release their S95, SX130 and SD4500 point and shoot cameras first (August 17th) and then the Canon 60D on August 26th. The rumor is that the new Canon G12 will be released in September.

PhotographyBay also found a Canon patent for built-in radio triggers for wireless flash.

All you need to know about Photokina

Photokina is the biggest show for photography equipment that takes place every 2 years in Cologne, Germany. This year Photokina will be between September 21- 26. Here is a summary of all rumors, predictions and expectations for the main players in the industry:

  • Canon: Canon G12 is a given, based on previous release patterns (they release a new version every year in September). Low chance for a new small/compact DSLR. Pictures of the Canon 60D are already available online, so you know that one is coming. There could be more PowerShots cameras like the S95, SX30 and SX130. I am sure that Canon will also release new lenses as well but I have not idea what exactly.
  • Panasonic: a new GH (probably called GH2) and a new GF cameras (the GF1 was announced in September, 2009). New m4/3 lenses are also expected: 14mm f/2.5 and the 100-300mm lens.
  • Olympus: Olympus E-3 successor is certain and probably a new PEN, since they are on a 6 months refresh cycle: the E-P2 was released in November 2009, the E-PL1 was released in May, 2010 – you do the math.

Lenses manufacturers after the break:

Sinar with a new digital back at Photokina 2010

One of Sinar's current digital back models - the eMotion 75 LV

Rumors from small manufacturers are rare, so I really enjoyed receiving this one even though there was not much information provided: Sinar will present a new high-end multishoot digital back at Photokina. It will have a roller ball selector, screen and new, more intuitive menu system.

If you have any information about an upcoming, photography related product, please contact me.

Canon patent for EF 28-70mm F2.8 USM lens

Not sure why Canon filed that patent two years ago, since the old Canon EF 28-70mm f/2.8 L USM lens was replaced by the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM.

The details:

  • Patent Publication No. 2010-145831
    • published 2010/07/01
    • filled 2008/12/19
  • Embodiment 3
    • focus distance f=28.7-68.00mm
    • Fno=2.92
    • angle of view 74.02-35.30
    • image circle 43.28mm
    • lens length 177.91-168.98mm
    • back focus 46.71-75.33mm
  • Zooming, there are few changes of distortion
  • Retrofocus optical in wide angle
  • Tele-photo optical in tele-photo
    • short full length
  • Distortion is big in wide angle
    • astigmatism turns worse if it use the aspherical where the quantity is big
    • problem solving by a certain a lens was arranged in symmetry, and denying the distortion
  • Use aspherical
    • improve distortion
    • Because it is not necessary to make non-spherical surface quantity big, the astigmatism does not turn worse

Interesting response from Pentax on their “EVIL thoughts”

Another one from the PentaxForum – this is how Pentax Imaging Technical Support answered to an email question about a possible EVIL camera from Pentax:

“Thank you for contacting Pentax.
As mirror-less camera categories are showing strong growth, we too are examining the possibility of producing this type of camera. And if we are to release such products, we believe that the camera should be a unique and distinctive model.
At this point PENTAX does not have a fixed plan for the release schedule, specifications, or price information.

Sincerely,
Dorian B.
Operations Supervisor
Pentax Imaging Technical Support”

The words “unique” and “distinctive” are an interesting description – Pentax made also some comments in the past that their mirrorless camera will be different:

“It’s quite clear that we don’t want to be seen as the same as everyone else. We would go down a different route. We are looking to grow. We want to grow. It’s going to be an exciting year. I think everybody will see a change in Pentax.”
